A city within a city, powered by Vecos

Setting the tone for the next decade of collaboration and innovation, the new Zalando campus in Berlin includes the new company headquarters and is comprised of 10 buildings with a footprint of 100,000 sqm. Plenty of room for creativity, teaming up and exciting new ways of working, such as flexible workstations and silent spaces. Powered by more than 10,000 Vecos lockers.

“Our new headquarters and the campus enable us to work even better together; discovering and creating more innovative solutions for our customers. It’s a place that reunites our employees; another step on our growth path, and we are looking forward to the next decade of the Zalando story.”

3.0 Working Environment

Continuing the design model developed especially for Zalando, a working environment with industrial charm was created in the new building, which has received both DGNB Silver and LEED Gold awards. Open spaces to promote communication, retreats for concentrated work, conference rooms for teams and special zones for informal exchanges are distributed throughout the floors. Thanks to a rethinking of the areas contrary to the cellular structure of a classic office environment, a new, flexible 3.0 working environment was created for this young online company.

A city within a city

Sustainable office worlds provide flexible communication areas that promote creativity and interchange. The spatial organization of the offices on the upper floors is deliberately organized with both concentration and interaction zones in order to accommodate the shifting needs of the staff and to meet the differentiated uses. The considerable depth of the building is broken up through the skillful layering of the program, whereby the various functions – from the lobby to the roof terrace – group themselves around the atrium in the form of a double-helix. In the so-called “living rooms”, social interaction is encouraged through varying spaces for exchange such as co-working seating landscapes, kitchenettes with wooden tables and bar stools, a balustrade with space for laptops and a view out over the whole campus. This exchange, and the connectivity between these communal areas on the individual floors, is additionally magnified through the open stairway.

Connected by catwalks

The campus work zones – which are called “neighborhoods”– can be effortlessly adapted to quickly shifting teams. Besides fixed workstations, areas were conceived in which the staff can find seclusion to undertake concentrated work. At the same time, opportunities for exchange always stay possible. Radiating from this interactive core, the work atmosphere along the length of the neighborhood transforms into calm concentration and retreat zones. The various different office areas are connected by “catwalks”. Inspired by the city’s boulevards and the iconic design of their namesakes, the catwalks structurally interconnect the different areas and enable interactions and networking across all levels by means of meeting zones and encounter spaces. In this respect, it was important that during the competition the Berlin office KINZO joined the architectural design team and formulate the interior-space concept.
