British Petroleum (bp) is one of the UK’s most important companies with operations in more than 70 countries and revenues that put it in the world’s top 20. bp has recently installed a global flexible working policy that empowers employees to make informal arrangements to decide how, where and when they work.

ICBT Sunbury

The International Centre for Business & Technology (ICBT) is a cornerstone in the delivery of bp’s business worldwide. Located in Sunbury-on-Thames, Greater London, the ICBT is ‘home’ to some 3,500 people from across the globe, working in more than 55 different international business teams.

The guiding principle for the new masterplan for bp’s ICBT was to create a campus that was flexible and adaptable enough to respond to the company’s various business areas and their needs and objectives.

Sustainability was a key consideration in the Sunbury project with each building within the campus achieving either BREEAM Excellent or Very Good ratings. A mixed-mode energy strategy has informed the design of the buildings, combining advanced technology with natural passive systems.

Vecos is the proud supplier of >2,700 lockers at this bp location. All 162,000 global bp employees synced with the Vecos Smart Locker System have access to these lockers when they work at or visit the ICBT.

London – Canary Wharf

bp’s integrated supply and trading (IST), City-facing function is based in 25 North Colonnade in Canary Wharf. Canary Wharf is an area of ex-docklands that was redeveloped into a secondary financial centre for London in the late 1980s. It’s home to some of the city’s tallest skyscrapers and the London headquarters of many of the world’s largest financial institutions.

The unique 20,000 sq m space spans across eight floors of the Cargo building, a redeveloped 1990s office block, and includes a variety of spaces that are designed to feel both intuitive and ergonomic. Conceived during the pandemic, the design is informed by the need to provide every single different person the space to feel at home and enable them to be fulfilled in their work.

Positioned as small neighbourhoods, the workspaces cater to individual preferences by offering a balance of interactive hubs and distraction-free zones. Colour, materiality and zoning create specific sensory experiences that prompt the intended user behaviour. Large open-plan areas are grouped into smaller clusters, which includes rows of sit-stand desks, rings of desks with bonsai centrepieces as well as scrum spaces and fixed height team tables. Going far beyond standard requirements, every desk and meeting room has been designed with generous space that supports physical accessibility.

Key destinations and amenities are thoughtfully distributed across the floors to encourage movement and cultivate a sense of community.

London – St. James’s Square

Home to more than 500 people, BP’s global headquarters are in 1 St. James’s Square in Central London. The site accommodates board and executive management, together with the key corporate and business functions teams.

Vecos is the proud supplier of 120 lockers at this bp location. All 162,000 bp users synced with the Vecos Smart Locker System have access to these lockers when they work at or visit the HQ.
